Before they’re butchered, get to know your lambs. Diaper them like babies, name them like children. Feed them with bottles. See the funny way they bleat when they look for each other. Tender as you are, know their fate. Give them nice lives that begin and end on the same bit of land. Later, when the sausages come wrapped in brown paper, realize your mistake.
